大象视频 (RCC) welcomed internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Michel Camilo to the Henry W. Coil, Sr. and Alice Edna Coil School for the Arts on Oct. 2 for a master class with music students and a solo piano concert that drew a capacity audience to the Concert Hall.

A Grammy, Emmy and four-time Latin Grammy Award winner, Camilo began his visit by sharing insights from his international career during a master class with RCC music students. The session provided students with an opportunity to learn directly from the celebrated musician as he discussed his artistic development, professional experiences and collaborations with some of the most influential figures in music, including Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D鈥橰ivera, George Benson, Celia Cruz and Chucho Vald茅s.

The evening concert opened with a performance by the RCC Jazz Orchestra, directed by Charlie Richard. The ensemble has received repeated national recognition from DownBeat magazine, including multiple Student Music Awards for Outstanding Performance. Following the orchestra's performance, Camilo took the stage for a solo piano concert showcasing his technical mastery, rhythmic energy and expressive musical style. His performance blended jazz, classical and Afro-Caribbean influences, reflecting the musical traditions that have shaped his distinguished career.

The concert brought together RCC students, faculty and members of the greater Riverside community, filling the Concert Hall and demonstrating the region's enthusiasm for live music and the performing arts.

Beyond the performance, Camilo's visit highlighted RCC's commitment to providing students with access to accomplished professionals and meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom. Through the master class and concert, students gained firsthand exposure to the artistry, discipline and professional experiences associated with an internationally recognized musical career.

Hosting artists of Camilo's caliber also expands access to world-class performances for the broader community. By bringing internationally celebrated musicians to Riverside, RCC creates opportunities for students and residents to experience performances that are often associated with major metropolitan venues and international music festivals.

The event further reinforced the Coil School for the Arts' role as a center for arts education and cultural engagement in the Inland Empire. Through performances, master classes and collaborations with professional artists, RCC continues to connect classroom instruction with real-world experiences while strengthening its relationship with the community it serves.
